Kula in Sanskrit means a family which includes many generations and Kuladevata or Kuladevi is the family deity. Most Hindu families are likely to have a kuladevata, a family deity who has watched over the life journeys of their many generations, blessing them and prevented them from misfortune. Many of our ancestors might have taken a sankalpa to worship the family deity until their lifetimes or even made a promise on behalf of future generations. Hence, it is a rnam (sacred debt) that all future generations must honor and hence visit the kuladevata/devi atleast once a year and contribute to its activities.
Astrologically speaking, I have lost count of the many people who are experiencing difficulties (terrible fights within the family, sudden deaths, unable to marry/have a child/buy property) because they did not worship their kuladevata/devi. The flow of blessings from the devata which was taken for granted was stopped and hence the accumulation of punya of worship was no longer available to these suffering families. Sure enough, as the families resume worship, magic happens – health is restored, people marry, have children, buy property etc. Just as we are keen to maintain our family lineage, a part of the family tradition is to maintain worship to our kuladevata/devi.
If you are a practising Hindu but don’t know who your kuladevata is please find out from surviving relatives. If they don’t know or you belong to a different culture, it is enough to pray to your Ishta devata. You will continue to be blessed.
Do share in the comments below about who your kuladevata/devi is.
