The bare walls, empty corners, the corner table, the long corridors, the entrance to our homes, the neutral colored sofas come alive with the traditional crafts of India. These may be handicrafts made of bamboo, metalwork, wood work, paintings on cloth, terra cotta objects or pottery. Carpets from Kashmir/Uttar Pradesh, Madhubani paintings from Bihar, Murtis in granite, sandstone, marble of our deities from Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Bandhani from Gujarat etc. A wistful memory from our travels, these are also a symbol of a tradition of a craft that has been transmitted across generations. Can you imagine weddings, birthdays, anniversaries and celebrations of festivals in India without wearing our traditional weaves? It could be the Patan Patola from Gujarat or Kanjeevaram sarees from Kanchipuram with the temple designs on the border, Batik and Chanderi from Madhya Pradesh, Kantha from Rajasthan and West Bengal, Ikat from Pochampally/Sambalpur, Banarasi silk from Banaras, Kalamkari from Machlipatnam, Phulkari from Punjab, Lucknowi chikankari and so on.
Thanks to our weavers and small scale textile industries we enjoy the opportunity to wear art in fabric. To wear art and design from different parts of India with the unique colors, designs, patterns and textures across fabrics in India is not only a delight but an important contribution to sustain the livelihoods of weavers and workers. We contribute to our economy by wearing our weaves, fabrics and purchasing these handicrafts for ourselves or as gifts.
