How do we learn about the glorious vision and the ways of living about Sanatana Dharma?
Through living in the culture,
through our families particularly elders (vrddha-vyavahaara),
through our gurus,
the mathas we are affiliated to,
the media and the institutions for education namely our schools, colleges and Universities.
We may complain about the quality of education but we have grown to trust these institutions.
And, so our schools, colleges and Universities must have certificate and degree courses in Dharma and Hindu studies.
While the Sanskrit and Philosophy departments do offer courses, a lot of the textbooks are Western and the lens is Western, for Hindu studies. Most well-known Universities have ‘chairs’ which are endowment funds for conducting courses and ensuring sustained learning.
There are departments and chairs for Islamic studies, Buddhist studies, Confucius studies, Jewish studies, Christianity (and its many denomination) studies. These are funded by their committed religious communities. Then, what about Hindu studies ?
Sadly there are very few departments in the world let alone India and of these, there are fewer chairs. Given the dismal situation, how can we share the learning of Dharma if we don’t invest in our academic institutions? We must come forward and support Indian and international universities to have Hindu studies. Happy that just yesterday Benaras Hindu University announced their first ever course on Hindu studies. A long overdue step in the right direction. My online course on ‘How to have harmonious relationships’ is still on Udemy. My three month course on Living our svadharma in the contemporary world under the aegis of the Hindu University of America has just begun. All of us need to pitch in.
