When you try to pick one noodle from a heaped plate of noodles, a few more noodles tag along. You can’t eat just one!
When you try to do even a few asanas or pranayama other angas of Ashtanga yoga, come along and the treasure of yoga becomes available thanks to the guru-shishya parampara and particularly Rishi Patanjali. The strength and flexibility that you experience comes along with a calmness and composure. You delve some more – The dharmika foundation of yoga inspire you to embody yama (avoidances). We have tendencies of wanting to hurt, lie, plagiarise, indulge, possess. But we start to enjoy avoiding these by embodying Yama (Ahimsa-no-harm to beings, Satyam-truthfulness, Aparigraha – non possessiveness, Brahmacharya – Sexual discipline, Asteya – non-stealing). You also begin to enjoy niyama-s (observances) – Shaucham – purity at the level of body, words and thoughts, Santosha – contentment, Tapas – Religious discipline, Svaadhyaaya – study of the Shaastra, Ishvarapranidhaanam – surrender to Ishvara. For instance in just the practice of an asana, you practice ahimsa to yourself – you push yourself enough for it to be tapas and you have santosha in what you have done. As you grow comfortable with discomfort, your comfort zone expands. Even the practice of pranayama helps you to anchor yourself and soar to great heights in your relationship with your own body-mind and to life itself. If just asana and pranayama can create such magic, then what to say of the other angas – pratyahara, dharana, dhyana and samadhi (to be practised with the help of a guru).
Big issues becomes small issues and small issues become non issues. Yoga can ground us and can be a great preparation for Vedanta.
