This is part two of a two-part series on which is the best sadhana/yajna according to the Bhagavad Gita. Through sadhanas we seek to transform ourselves. It is a quiet inner revolution by which, the way you interact with yourself …
There is a lot of confusion around the word sadhana which is reflected in the questions asked often – What will happen if I skip my sadhana for a few days? What is the best sadhana? If I continue doing …
A long time ago when I used to work with abused, homeless children, one particular morning a bright fellow, probably eight years old had walked in. He was trying to break the queue of the other boys who had lined up for breakfast. After picking up the vada-pav (which is like an Indian vegetarian burger) he saw me, promptly tore away half of the vada pav and extended it towards me. I knew he had been hungry. He lived on the streets and the only belongings he had was what he wore on his body. I politely refused! ’This is for you, beta (child). I am not hungry.’ And he said matter of factly,’ Didi (sister) Surely, I can give what I have.’ I was very moved by this. Seeing my eyes well up, he tried to make light of the situation and said, ‘You might as well eat it or these fellows will pounce on it.’ That day I discovered what it meant to be really ‘rich’. You don’t have to be rich to give.
You give and that makes you rich.
Pujya Swami Dayananda Saraswati ji eloquently said – By giving, you grow from being a consumer to a contributor.
Any kind of contribution involves a bigness of heart. When daanam becomes a way of life, it makes you grow into the bigness that you are capable of.
To give, you do not need an auspicious time, you do not need permission from anyone, you do not need to be rich one fine day, you don’t have to feel generous.
You give. You connect. You care. It is quite simple.
